OUR LEGACY

Founded in 1862 as a parish school by Father Aubert Bouillon ss.cc, pastor of Maria Lanakila Catholic Church and a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Sacred Hearts School has been continually serving the children of Maui for over 150 years.  When Sacred Hearts School began in the mid 1800's, Pioneer Mill was not yet built.  With the end of whaling, Lahaina's demographics changed from sailors to plantation workers of many ethnic backgrounds.  The first school was simply two classrooms built next to Maria Lanakila Church.  In 1870, the school doubled in size... to four classrooms.  In 1928, the Sisters of St. Francis joined our school. Joy, charity, peacemaking and simplicity were the principles they lived by.Their mission was to come together to help the children and they perpetuated the Spirit of 'ohana begun by Father Selelande.  Each graduating class carried on the traditions and principles of our founders.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of Sacred Hearts School is to provide excellence in education and to nurture a life of prayer, faith and service in the Catholic Tradition.

VISION STATEMENT

A place where children walk with God, on their journey of learning about themselves and their world.

Alma Mater

O wherever we will go, and whatever we will do. Our loyalty and our love for our God will always be true. And no matter where our paths may lead, our spirits will never part. The joyful songs and the friends we have made at good ole Sacred Hearts. Today we can only dream of the gifts tomorrow will bring.  All the things that we learn this day, will teach our hearts to sing. O wherever we will go, and whatever we will do. Our loyalty and our love for our God will always be true. And no mater where our paths may lead, our spirits will never part. The joyful songs and the friends we have made, at good ole Sacred Hearts. At good ole Sacred Hearts. At good ole Sacred Hearts. (Alma Mater was composed by Ben Uyetake, a former teacher at Sacred Hearts School, 1991.)

School Logo

Sacred Hearts School, originally known as Maria Lanakila School, started as a two-room unit in 1846. The school was staffed by the Pastor and his assistant. The cross and two hearts symbolize our Catholic Faith and the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Lahaina, the historic whaling port, is the winter home to the Humpback Whale. The mother and calf whales depict the school’s love and care for the students we teach and nurture. Finally, the image of the students symbolize the belief that an excellent education nurtures the intellectual, spiritual, social, emotional and physical growth of all students and develops a lifelong love of learning.
