A Welcome Letter from the Principal of Sacred Hearts School
July 26, 2018
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new principal of Sacred Hearts School. I feel truly blessed and honored in being selected to serve as principal of such a wonderful historic school. I come to this position with energy and excitement as I look forward to meeting and working with all members of this school community.
My experience in education spans over the past 17 years in which I have served as a teacher and focused on various administrative and leadership capacities in both small parochial and a large school serving over 1,500 students. In addition, my leadership experience includes being part of an Academic Council and Department Chair for various teachers and leading the way in innovative practices such as blended learning, project-based instruction and flipping classroom modalities. The extensive educational background I have includes degrees in Education from Loyola Marymount University and a Doctoral Degree from the University of Southern California’s premier Rossier School of Education with a particular focus on Educational Leadership in Hawaiian Catholic K-12 and Higher Education Schools. Words cannot describe how thrilled I am to bring my knowledge and skills as an educational leader to Sacred Ground and to work with you, as a partner in education, to ensure the success of your children.
My goal as your Principal is to provide the leadership that will facilitate a school environment that provides the best possible academic instruction to meet the needs of each student to the best of our ability. In providing your children with the best instruction possible, I welcome back the following Sacred Hearts Educators: 7th grade teacher Christine Dunham, 6th grade Patty Wurst, 5th grade Amanda Thomson, 4th grade Wyndy Quandt, 2nd grade Tonata Lolesio, 1st grade Shay Talboys, ELC Lead Teacher, Vanessa Brovelli, ELC Teacher, Nicole Okada, Aides: Crysta Kosianowski, Chelsea Toia and Irais Guererro. We extend an additional welcome to our Priests, Fathers Joseph and Sebastian as well as our Sisters Rovi, Monica and Mary. We are also fortunate to have with us Jan Pasamonte the school’s secretary and Yvette Richard who is the Director of Development and Enrollment, Finance Director Manny Fernando, P.E. coach Tom Popdan, Resource teacher Katie Tursi, Art Teacher Stacy Coon, Music and Drama Lori Ulman, Shawn McLaughlin Ukelele Instructor, and Joe Pueschel who heads Security for the school. Howard and Alejandro who also maintain the school in great shape should be welcomed and acknowledged for the endless hours they put into the school along with GM Painting & Restoration LLC and Property Services LLC who help keep our classrooms fresh and clean. I really didn’t want to leave anyone out and hope I didn’t.
Aside from myself, there are new members to our Sacred Hearts family that should also be welcomed with open arms. Our new Kindergarten teacher is Miss Holly Symank, enthusiastic and ready to begin her role as a teacher, she’s been working hard all summer long prepping her classroom and giving it her own spin. Our new 8th Grade teacher is Mrs. Kristen Byers, a vibrant teacher with a lot of fresh ideas that will spark interest in our 8th graders, she’s going to have great connections with our students that will spark within them the love of reading and writing. Our new 3rd Grade teacher is Miss Susanna Soto, an active member of our parish community and soon to be married in September, she’s eager to help form our 3rd graders and in preparing them to be great students for their larger student roles down the road. Mrs. Alexis Merrill who needs to be formally welcomed will be co-teaching with Mrs. Dunham in 7th grade, loves Math and helps challenge students in various problem-solving aspects which is essential for the middle school. Dr. Lisa Zamora will too be a part-time employee serving teachers directly as Director of Curriculum and Instruction, she was a previous Principal at Our Lady of the Valley in Canoga Park, CA and comes with a tremendous amount of experience in this field. Finally, Wendy Coon will now be our Hawaiiana Instructor and will be on campus part-time, she’s passionate about what she does. I along with all students are willing to learn a lot from what she has to offer.
While academics is a very important part of education, I believe that teaching the love of Christ with morals and values are just as important in developing the “whole” student. It is my sincere hope that we will work together to provide the children of Sacred Hearts School the best possible educational opportunities in preparing them for the future. Please feel free to stop by or call for an appointment to discuss any concerns, suggestions, or ideas. Please know that the best interest for your child’s education and for this community has taken priority. I am focused on supporting teachers and encouraging them for growth so that all of our students will reap the rewards. Therefore, I ask for everyone’s help to be a part of a greater team, help us elevate all the educators named above that are committed and dedicated to help your children triumph. Together we can make a difference in our school that can only add to the already marvelous history. As I’ve walked the grounds of the school and met many parents, faculty, staff and parishioners, I want to assure you that you have made the right choice in placing your child(ren) here. Please be patient with all of these changes and with the slow implementation of new practices that continue to move the school forward. If you feel called to be a part of positive growth, please call us and get involved in PTG, we need new faces and new innovative practices to inspire the rest of us, it will definitely take all of us to re-invigorate and continue to bring vibrant goals to life. Mahalo once again, you have made the right choice and I look forward to meeting you all and working with your child(ren).
May the spirit of Aloha continue to fill your household.
