The Eddie Aikau Essay contest is open to all 7-10 grade students in public or private schools throughout the state of Hawaii. One of the main goals of the contest is to inform people in more detail of why Eddie Aikau is important to the people of Hawaii, and a hero to people around the world. Our class began working on our essay about two weeks ago.
The prompts for this year are based on the recent Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau. This is one of the most prestigious surfing contests in the world. We are writing about
*** Why Eddie has gained worldwide attention, and
*** How he has effected our lives.
The maximum essay is 1,000 words and is due by September 24th. At the moment our class is working on our final rough draft. Many of us have written 3 or 4 rough drafts so far. We will have completed our final essay by the end of this week. Our class's goal is to have all of the essays submitted by September 9th. Although the deadline is not until September 24th, our class wants to ensure that our essays are completed and mailed before the deadline.
In the beginning of our process we learned all the we could about Eddie. He was important not only as a world class surfer and an exemplary lifeguard, but had a spiritual impact throughout the globe. Eddie's life is a prime example of one who cared for his people, history, and native culture.
His legend lives because of how he lived his life and how he gave it for others.
